Here’s what you need to know about Swiss money in order to escape problems.
The currency is the Swiss franc, which is divided into 100 centimes.
Bank notes: 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1000 francs.
Coins: 5, 10, 20 and 50 centimes and 1, 2 and 5 francs.
Banks and bureaux de change: banks and bureaux de change offer interesting rates. Hotels change money, too, but usually at less favourable rates.
Credit cards: credit cards (such as Mastercard , Visa, Eurocard, American Express and Diners) are accepted by most hotels, restaurants and shops.
ATM: Automatic Teller Machines (from which money can be withdrawn) are found mainly in banks, Cornavin railway station, the airport and some shopping centres.
Tipping: Tipping is not necessary since hotels, restaurants and taxis automatically add a service charge and government tax on bills; however, a lot of people here do leave a tip, especially in cafés, when they are pleased with the service or if they find the waiter/waitress attractive.
